Port of the Year

Port of Halifax, Canada

Halifax Port Authority (HPA) gave a long-term land lease for a nominal fee to the Mission to Seafarers' building in the Halifax Seaport, close to the cargo and cruise terminals. Since the 1990s the USD30,00 a year proceeds from its voluntary toll for ships docking at its terminals have gone to the mission. HPA also works closely with the seafarer coordinator to involve the mission in port events such as port days, cruise ship inaugurals and stakeholder meetings.

The seaport provides facilities such as free WiFi and the farmers' market, and allows seafarers to access transportation to and from the secured terminals. HPA provides free security clearances and cards to mission staff and volunteers so that they can access and park in all terminals.

Port staff visit the mission and provide the seafarer coordinator enhanced clearance to visit cruise ships. The port provides a daily status report to aid with ship visit scheduling. Port employees often alert the mission to a seafarer's problem on board.

HPA is one of the mission's largest financial donors. Together, the Mission to Seafarers and HPA provide a shoebox program, supplying gifts to approximately 1,500 seafarers, and an annual Christmas lunch attended by over 300 members of the port community. HPA's director of human resources was awarded with a long-service award for volunteering with the mission, and HPA staff sit on the mission's board and have started an annual wine tasting event to raise funds for the mission.
